Early February Report
Posted by Steve Vavrik on 2024 Feb 9th
I've been out of the loop on vacation doing some beach fishing in Hawaii. My report for Maui is it was too rough for safe beach fishing, but I shouldn't complain.
Here on the Island I'm hearing good reports from French Creek, with lot's of winter Springs coming in. Biggest I've seen so far is 14lb with the average around 10lbs. They are still a bit smaller then what we are seeing in Nanaimo for Chinook but they are plentiful. Big Eye Howe Sound Security spoons with Chartreuse Homeland Security flasher trolled 200ft down are your best bet in both areas.
Here in Nanaimo we still have large schools of Coho around 18-20 inches. Coho is currently closed, but this indicates an excellent Coho year coming up. Both they and the Chinook are gaining weight quickly feeding on the large herring schools that have moved into our area.
The herring spawn is coming. It should be anytime from late February to late March. We just got our shipment of herring jigs in. They are not on the website yet.
Howe Sound fishermen are still having great success with larger Winter Springs. Green Glow spoons like Irish Cream or again Howe Sound Security are taking the fish.
If you have the chance over to get out over the next couple months take it. Fishing is great throughout Georgia Straight, so we have a great opportunity to put a few fish in the freezer.
Tips up,
