Spring Salmon Fishing

Posted by Steve Vavrik on 2024 Feb 23rd

It's almost spring and the fishing for Spring salmon is top notch. Every report I'm getting has been very positive. If your boat is ready to go take advantage of the good fishing and relaxed regulations we currently have. The size of the fish is still a bit larger than we normally have at this time of year.

The Nanaimo fishing is very hot with fish at all depths. Deep trolling off Entrance Island and East Gabriola are providing the best sized fish. No Bananas Skinny G's with No Bananas flashers trolled at 220' right off the bottom are working. However in tight and shallow near Five Fingers and Pipers lagoon. Killy Magee spoons and Black Onion flashers at 150ft are taking fish. Plugs are also working here, and getting the larger fish. Try any green Tomic plug fished with a dummy flasher.

French Creek also has lot's of good sized Springs. Out there anchovies in glow Candy Man teaser heads are working the best. The fish are deep at the Double Bumps, but I suspect if someone tried shallow around Gerald Island there might be fish there too.

Reports of a minor herring spawning near Squamish and staging off Nanoose are coming in. With the full moon tomorrow Feb 24 we might see a bigger spawn. I've heard from several old timers that they spawn around full moons, so we will see.

Thanks to Marcus Vivian and everyone else who have sent me reports and pictures.
