Sunshine and Lingcod
Posted by Steve Vavrik on 2024 May 15th
The lingcod fishing has been great when the wind lets up. The fishermen that have zipped out when there has been a break in the wind have done very well. Lingcod are a short lived species that begin spawning between 3 and 5 years of age, and their populations have been trending up in recent years. The best lures as always are swimbaits, although in high current areas slim jigs like Puget Pounders are good as they have less drag.
The best locations have been the normal reefs and pinnacles in rocky areas. Lingcod can be found at any depth from 20ft to 200ft. I have caught many of mine in turbulent surge channels in only 10ft of water. Make sure to run a heavy leader or steel leader as they have sharp teeth and will chomp through your line.
We are two weeks away from clipped Coho opening up and everything is pointing to another record year. The Coho did not migrate to the open Pacific this year, and are instead feeding in Georgia Straight. So we are basically back to the blue back days. Except they are already bigger than blue back sized, and it will be interesting to see what their average size is once guys start targeting them. So get your Coho Killers ready and try pairing with our custom Blue Mirror Coho flasher.
Also a reminder our electronics specialist Tim Wicks is putting on his "Fishing Smarter with Electronics" lecturer on May 16th. See link for further info. https://nanoosecps.ca/events/
