Coho Countdown!!
Posted by Steve Vavrik on 2024 May 23rd
The countdown to the Coho opening has begun. We expect it to open up June 1st for hatchery Coho here in Georgia Straight. (Check the regulations prior to fishing). And everything is pointing to a banner year for Coho. As mentioned in my winter reports the Coho have not migrated to the open Pacific to feed, and are instead staying in Georgia Straight. They are bigger and more abundant than we have seen in 30 years, so now is the time to gear up for them. The best lures throughout the winter were Skinny G Blue Phantom and Doctor Death SpinFish and I expect them to keep working. I'm also eager to try the new West Coast spoons Sex-E silver Blue Silver spoon. It looks like Coho dynamite, Pair these with Hotspot Blue Anchovy and Metallic Blue Jelly flashers for best results.
I don't have any locations to recommend for Coho yet, as they move around a lot. So if you get into them, please send me a report and if possible photos.
In the fresh water Bass fishing is continuing to very hot. Soft baits and your best bet right now. The best lures for the week have been Zman Slam Shady TRD's on a VMC 1/8th NED Rig, along with Berkley Power Bait The General in Green Pumpkin. Pair these with VMC Weedless Wacky Hooks in 1/0 to punch through the weeds.
Trout fishing in the lakes is great right now with local Nanaimo lakes doing well, and Cowichan lake producing some real monsters. Pink Power bait under a bobber or casting #1 Rainbow Blue Fox Vibrax spinners.
