Fish and Chips Time!

Ling fishing is off to an excellent start with successful fishermen reporting good catches. If you are new to ling fishing they can be found at any depth from 10ft down to 200ft. They generally hang out on rocky ledges and on underwater cliffs. They sit on their perch waiting to ambush passing fish. If you don't have a ling honey hole, try trolling a swimbait dead slow along the steepest underwater cliff you can find. Parallel the wall but don't get too close or you might snag it. My favorite swimbaits are reds like Sweet Georgia Brown (which is red despite its name) or oranges. Always run a heavy leader to stand up to their teeth, and please consider releasing really large ones as they are breeding females.
Chinook fishing is still very hot, with good catches coming from the Tent Island area. There are a high percentage of clipped fish the the potential of getting something to take home is high. These fish are making their way south, to the Sidney Victoria area. So heads up if that's your fishing area, you should be into some good fish soon. Smaller spoons are working the best with many baby herring in the area. Big eye Georgia Tyee and White Lightning Coho Killers have been the top spoons of the week.
Prawning is still fairly decent, but the commercial season starts pretty soon. If you have time, get out now nd get some prawns and jig a ling while you wait.
There are a couple of events for boaters put on by the Nanaoose Power and Sail Squadron.
Including Fishing Smarter with electronics by our own Tim Wicks as lecturer on May 16th.
