Fall Beach and River Fishing is Here!
Posted by Steve Vavrik on 2022 Sep 22nd
The fall salmon season is starting to kick off. Coho and Springs are staging to river mouths and moving upstream in the bigger rivers. Water levels of the smaller streams are still low, and we need a little bit of rain to get things really rolling.
There should be excellent opportunities at most river mouths along the East side of Vancouver Island. The little Qualicum, Nile Creek, Oyster River and basically every other little creek that flows into Georgia Straight.
These fish are holding in shallow water. To target them use spinners, casting spoons and Trout Beads. Prime lures spinners have been working well for Coho. Blue Fox Vibrax spinners, Gibbs Koho casting spoons and Trout Bead brand Mottled Beads will work for both Springs and Coho.
There are still some salmon opportunities in the ocean. There have been great reports for Coho fishing off Sooke and Port Renfrew. Herring Aid Coho killers and Skinny G's have been the top lures for these guys.
Off Nanaimo we have basically all species of salmon except Sockey right now. There are plenty of Springs and some Coho around. Snake Island has been producing a lot of Springs in the last couple days.
The Chum salmon are starting to show up in the mid Island area. They are an underutilized resource, and are the hardest fighting salmon. Target them with slow trolled purple hoochies.
