Herring Season

Fishing has been a bit spottier than the last few weeks. Guys are still getting fish and marking a lot of fish and bait. But as is normal for this time of year, as when the herring move in sometimes there's so much bait it's hard to get your lure noticed. Large spoons such as Georgia Tyee and plugs have been working. Often fishing away from the bait can be more productive at this time of year. After all, with millions of fat mature herring schooled up, the salmon might not notice a lure dragged though the bait.
Although at this time of year I like to get out there and load up on herring for the season. I use them for crabbing, bottom fish and cut plugging. (we have new plug cutting templates in stock) I also always harvest the roe from some for my own dinner. Sautéed in olive oil with garlic, served on French bread is my favorite spring meal. We have plenty of herring (sabiki) jigs in stock.
Normal locations from Entrance Island to Thrasher Rock are still producing fish. Tent Island is also a bit better than up Nanaimo way.
Prawning is still excellent where it's open. Crabbing seems to be picking up fairly well too. Yum Yum Bait is producing good catches of both.
We've had some daytime tides low enough for clamming and oysters. I was able to collect a feed of both last weekend. We have great dipping baskets for clamming or prawning. These makes for a less sandy messy operation.
Local lakes are producing very nice cutthroats. This posts picture if of a 20" cutthroat from a lake in city limits. Try our brand new full line of Mepps spinners.
Tips up,
