June is Coho Season!

 Coho has opened up for retention of two hatchery clipped fish of 12 inches or bigger. I have not heard of too many around Nanaimo yet, but there are definitely lots just North of the French Creek. With lots of bait around Gabriola I'd expect to see some moving our way soon. To target these acrobatic Salmon, troll shallower than for Chinook around bait balls and tidelines. Chrome Blues spoons like Silver Horde Super Pearl UV Blue/Chartreuse Dots (that's a mouthful of a name) or the Gibbs TKO spoon. These where designed for Kokanee or Trout, but they are great for Coho. Just tie on a bigger hook and run them on short leaders. Pair with a Blue Mirror or Brain Freeze and troll around 3.5 knots.

Ling Cod fishing has continued to be great around Nanaimo. A Harbour Chandler staff member caught and released a couple monsters around 40lbs over the weekend. Lighthouse Lures Mega Bite in Sweet Georgia Brown and Max Shad in Purple Morris and Gibbs Powerpaddle in Herring Aid where the best lures.
