Rock Cod & Ling Cod Opens Soon!

May 1st is opening day for Ling cod and Rock Cod (Rock Fish). Lingcod fishing has been great in Georgia Straight for the last few years, and it should continue to be this year.

Best lures for Ling are large swimbaits. The bigger the better as Lings can take huge lures. The large lures reduce bycatch of small Rock Cod. Remember when using a swimbait, don't jig it up and down. Just let the current actuate the tail while you hold the lure in one place. They can also be trolled off a downrigger, or even put on a spreader-bar.

My favorites are Lighthouse Lures Max Shads and especially Savage Gear Burbots. The Burbots are a Pike lure, but Lingcod cant resist them.

A new lure that I'm keen to test out are the West Coast Fishing Tackle Jigging Octopus. Lingcod love octopus, so I suspect these lures will work well.

Make sure you have your Rock Fish Descender ready to go for any hook and line fishing in saltwater. These are legally mandated and they actually work to save any Rock Fish you are releasing.
