Spring is Here!

 Springtime arrives with herring season on the West Coast. The herring are ready to spawn and they are drawing in salmon, sealions and every other creature that eats herring. While fishing will be hit and miss until after the spawn, the large amounts of herring we are seeing should make for an excellent salmon season. Today there are commercial herring boats cruising around the south end of Denman Island looking for herring. This indicates to me that the spawn is coming soon. Maybe as soon as this weekend or not for a couple weeks. Only the herring know for sure.

I did hear some good reports from Sansum Narrows and off Sidney. Nice sized fish at 140ft. Best lure was the Gibbs Skinny G in Trailhead colours.

Around Nanaimo larger 5 and 6 inch spoons have been working. Coyote spoons in glow Kermit and glow Green Tiger have proven successful. Glow green and glow chartreus flashers are still your best bet.

Tent Island area is holding some beautiful Winter Springs. Harbour Chandler staff members Chip and Gibson have been doing well with T-Rex Hoochies. See picture with thsi article.

Prawning and crabbing remains excellent. If you are not getting crabs try deeper than you normally fish. If you are not getting prawns try weighting down your traps more.
