Spring Ling
Posted by Steve Vavrik on 2022 May 5th
The spring Lingcod season has been off to a good start with excellent catches being reported. Lingcod populations have definitely been strong the last few years and that trend seems to be continuing. Look for them in high current rocky locations. As for depth, I've caught Lings in anywhere from 10ft to 200ft of water. Remember to use a strong leader so they don't bite your lure off. Either heavy mono or steel leader will work.
As for the West Coast of the Island, the salmon fishing has been up and down as waves of fish travel by. This is normal until more local fish start to hold in location. Coho killers have been the best lure around Renfrew and Tofino. Lures with dots seem to be working well. Like Green Frog and Watermelon. And also (this is embarrassing to recommend, but it works) Blue Berry Muffin. Click the link and you'll see what I mean.
Best flashers lately have been Salty Dog and CB55.
Fishing For Fun will be holding Family Fishing Day event Saturday May 7th at lower Colliery Dam in Nanaimo. I will be there representing the Harbour Chandler. Fishing For Fun is a non-profit organization dedicated to introducing children to fishing. Come by and say hi. Bring your fishing rod and kids. see you there!
