Ocean or River? Take Your Pick!

While mid October is normally river fishing time, this year river and ocean fishing are both currently very good. In fact if you want record book class Coho fishing in the salt they are still out there. Fish up to 15lbs are schooling around Five Finger Island and Hudson Rocks. This size class is unheard of in recent decades in Georgia Straight, so take advantage of it while you can. There are also still some big Chinook in the same area. The rains we have had have not been enough to shut down the salt water fishing, so get out and enjoy the calm water before the fall storms arrive.
Port Renfrew and Sooke are also reporting great late season Coho fishing if you want to head out that way. Best lures continue to be blue gold mirror flashers' with nickel blue Skinny G's.
Chum fishing around Portier Pass was good for Chum this week. Surprisingly Maverick spoons actually did most of the damage.
Browns Bay just North of Campbell River is also heating up for Chum salmon. The popular Browns Bay derby is coming up October 20-22. we have a selection of Chum gear including purple Chum hoochies and dodgers. Try running extra dummy flashers, or in-line flashers when Chum fishing. My favorite Chum lure is the Everglo Purple Flash Fly.
As for the rivers The Qualicum, Stamp and around Campbell River are all excellent. Check my previous few post for lure suggestions. Some parts of the Nanaimo should open for one Coho 25cm-35cms on October 15th, with increased opportunities after October 31st. Always check the regulations prior to fishing.
