Fall Rains
Posted by Steve Vavrik on 2023 Oct 19th
The first big rains of the fall have arrived, and the rivers are up. This should get most of the salmon moving towards and into their home rivers. Coho fishing in the Nanaimo River has been good, with lot's of nice jacks being taken. Water levels make some access points a bit dicey right now and the water is also pretty murky. This should improve over the next couple days and this weekend should be a good one on most local rivers. With plenty of fish already spawning BNR soft beads have been working well for Jack Coho and nice Cutthroat trout. See the picture in above this post for a chunky Cutthroat caught on our custom made Trophy Glyde center pin, here in the mid-Island area. Wordens Rooster Tail spinners have also been taking trout in smaller rivers.
This weekend is the Browns Bay derby and we have a shipment of Big Shooters Chum Special flasher. Run these with a purple or pink squirt hoochie and troll as slow as possible. 40-60 ft down seems to be the most productive depth. The jumpers on the surface are usually not feeding as much as the fish a bit deeper.
There should still be Coho in the salt for a bit yet, and our local Nanaimo Chum should being showing in in a little while.
tips up,
