More Winter Springs and Christmas Coho!?!

This winter is tuning out to be a very interesting one for salmon fishermen. There are not only lot's of feeder Chinook around but also Coho!  This is quite the surprise as we normally don't have Coho around at this time of year. However last year we had a similar situation with the Coho showing up early. The Coho are around 40cms right now, which is twice as big as the ones that surprised us last January. Through DNA sampling we learned that those fish where our local Georgia Straight Coho that didn't have to go off shore to feed, and instead stuck around and provided us with a incredible fishery.

Another surprise is that both the Chinook and Coho are running shallow. Jigging glow herring aid half jigs has been working around Entrance Island. This is very unusual for this time of year. There are also plenty of fish in deeper water as well, so trolling deep (200ft) has also been productive along the East side of Gabriola. Glow Cop Cruiser with white glow flashers has been most productive.

The Howe Sound fishermen are reporting similar fishing and are doing very well. French Creek hasn't mentioned Coho, but their winter feeder spring fishery is very good. All areas are reporting Chinook in the 12-14lb range which is large for feeders.

So if you have time off over Christmas, get out and do some salmon fishing.
