Herring Spawn Time!

Posted by Steve Vavrik on 2024 Mar 8th

It's herring spawning time on the coast! Now is your chance to load up on bait and tasty herring roe. This year looks like a good one with high numbers of herring everywhere in Georgia Straight. I haven't seen a large spawn but it should be any day now. If you see one please email me at steve@harbourchandler.ca

With all these herring we can expect fishing to slow down a little bit, but as of yet it's still great in most locations.

Nanaimo is still producing catch limits of feeder Chinook in the 12-14lb range. Last weekend around Entrance island they were being taken from 220ft down close to the bottom, right up to the surface. Best lures continue to be small spoons like Coho Killers in White Lightning Yellow Tail and  3.5" Phat-E spoons in No Bananas. Pair these spoons with Gibbs Chartreus Watermark flashers.

I don't have a report from the fingers, but I know a pod of Orcas was feeding around them on March the 7th.

Peter L reports good numbers but mostly undersized around French Creek and some dogfish moving in. It could be the smaller springs from Comox have moved down with the herring.

In the fresh water local rivers have been fairly good for Steelhead. The top lures have been 4.5" WFO Pink Pearl Worms14mm BNR Soft Beads in Cosmo, and 14mm Unreel Beads in Fluorescent Pink. We should be good to go for at least the next couple weeks before they move onto their redds.

With local lakes starting to warm a bit the trout fishing is slowly picking up. Fish Berkley Power Bait in Fluorescent Orange or Glitter Sherbet on a Carolina rig,

Thanks to Markus for the nice photo, and to everybody keep the reports rolling it! It is apriciated.

tips up,
