River Prime Time!!
Posted by Steve Vavrik on 2024 Nov 1st
It is the prime time for salmon river fishing! This week has been great for Coho fishermen on most Vancouver Island rivers. Water levels are good, and conditions look like they will hold for a bit. The fish are clean and bright right now, and on the bite. Twitching jigs fished on the bottom have dominated. Blue and purple jigs like Hawken Aeojigs have been the best locally for the last couple days. But soft bead should come in their own very soon. One hatchery Coho caught this mornings stomach contained many chum eggs. So soft beads like BnR Lucky in 10-12mm under a clear 25gram Bau Mac Torpedo float would be my bet for this weekend.
In the ocean I'm hearing about some good winter Springs showing up in the Tent Island, and down to Samsun Narrows. Small spoons glow spoons like Knight Rider or Bloody Nose Anchovies Teasers trolled right on the bottom have been working. Pair these with double glow white flashers' and you will get hits. We are fortunate to have year round salmon fishing here on the Island, so get out when you can.
Prawning is also good in the Ladysmith, Saltspring Island areas. Remember to weight your traps, and check that the area is open prior to prawning as pulse fishing is in effect.
