Excellent River Reports

Posted by Steve Vavrik on 2024 Nov 6th

It has been a great week of river fishing. The mid-island weather is cooperating with enough rain to let the salmon move in. but not so much that the river is hard to fish. There has been a nice push of hatchery Coho into the Nanaimo River. It is now open to retention so get out while you can. All other East Island rivers from the Quinsam down to the Cowichan and everything in between are doing well this year. Top lures have been spinners like Prime Lures 'Clean up Crew' in Starburst and Blue Fox Vibrax in Green Chartreuse  .Casting spoons like P-Line Pro-Steel  2/3oz in Gold Silver  and Prime Lures Oval Spoon 5/8oz Blue, Silver Chartreuse have been taking lot's of Coho. If you want Chum, Coho and possibly Cutthroat try twiching jigs. Fish them under the float or try bottom bouncing. Best colours this week have been 3/8 oz Aerojig Twitching Jigs in Cerise Hot Pink and  Black head with Purple and Blue Body.

In the ocean I am still hearing about decent Coho fishing around French Creek and Nanaimo, as well as Port Renfrew. Although this must end soon when the big rains arrive.

Winter Springs are continuing to move into the Entrance Island area. Knight Rider spoons will be a winner for these tasty small Chinook. It would also be interesting to try plugs, as they worked very well last year for the Winters. Run them right off the bottom with a glow dummy flasher attached to your cannonball.

As for prawning I'm getting mixed reports this week. If you have been out prawning please email me a report to the email below. Include whatever info you are willing to share. General area info is enough, I won't share your exact prawning locations.
