Big Springs and Big Herring Starting to Show

Big Springs and Big Herring Starting to Show

Steve Vavrik |

I'm starting to hear reports about bigger Chinook being caught all throughout the mid Island area. With 12-16lb fish at French Creek right on the bottom at the double bumps.

And even some fish in the low 20's around the South end of Gabriola and down to Tent Island. These bigger fish have been coming in on 6" 602 Tomic plugs and big SpinFish in Touchdown pattern. Remember to fill you SpinFish with sticky gel scent. I like Procure Herring.

Bon Chovy Skinny G spoons and Yellowtail Coho Killers are the best spoons currently. Pair these with Bon Chovy flashers or double glow chartreuse.

With the cold dry weather we are in peak shellfish harvesting season. Most of the good low tides are at night. For clamming you really need about a 4ft tide. But I went out for oysters and muscles last Sunday on an 8ft tide and loaded up. It was a great family activity with the kids. Luckily they can harvest their own now, because they sure eat their own share!

Tips up!

We have been limiting out consistently. Cop car / hit and run skinny G and the black and silver coho killer has been filling coolers. Black flasher seems to be money. Flat tops and thrasher is where we dance. Caught a beautiful 86 cm yesterday. Amazing winter fishing
