Happy new fishing year to all Vancouver Island fishermen. I haven't had too much to write about for the last couple of weeks, as I haven't been getting very many reports. Not too many guys have been heading out due to the foul weather we've been having. However from the few hardy souls who have gone out, this is what I've heard.
Nanaimo waters have been spotty for winter Chinook, with most fish being undersized. The larger fish are still just south of us, from Thrasher Rock to Pollier Pass. Tent Island has been hot for larger fish in the high teens. French Creek also has fish but not as large.
There is still lots of bait moving around, and this bodes well for the up coming season. There are also lots of sea lions following the bait, so find the sea lions, find the bait and you'll find the Salmon.
The best lures in all these locations have just been normal gear for around here. Small spoons, in green/glow like Irish Cream, and Pink Sink. For Nanaimo and French Creek fish 200ft down in 200ft of water. For Tent Island 90ft in 90ft of water. Where ever you are fishing I'd be getting your gear all the way down, so find a soft bottom to drag your balls on.
Tips up,
Steve Vavrik
