Big Chinook Inbound!

This season is turning out to be an epic year for Georgia Straight. The Coho have chosen to come down the East Side of the Island and we also have an excellent run of big Chinook pushing though. The North end of the Island is off the hook right now, with great reports coming from Winter Harbour and Port Hardy. French Creek and Nanaimo are just starting to see the first of these big Chinook. Lot's of reports of high 20's fish coming from the humps off French Creek and Entrance Island. There are plenty of fish in the mid-teens as well. Best lures have been small anchovies with UV Teaser heads in green or purple. Also Irish Cream and Georgia Tyee spoons for the mid-Island and OAL12R or Turd hoochies with our custom Fancie Glancie flashers for up North. The squid are showing up from Hardy to Kuper Island as well as the West Coast, so hoochies will be hot for the next little bit.

Nootka and Kyuquot Sound are doing well, but Barkley and Renfrew are a bit slow currently. Both areas should pick up very soon.

The Coho are growing fast and much larger than is typical for this time of year. Most are still around the 6lb size, but 10lb fish are being caught. While Coho eat everything from Kraft dinner scrapped overboard (I know this from personal experience) to spoons made out of a beer can. The best lures are currently Maverick spoons and blue hoochies. Pair with Blue footloose flashers or Coho Specials.

It's also looking like a good Pink year, with many caught in the salt Chuck, and the Campbell River and Nile Creek are starting to fill with fish. Pink and chartreuse wool, or small pink L'il Nib jigs work for these abundant fish.
