The Last Springtime Spring Salmon
2019 Apr 22nd
The Chinook are here in abundance, and they are biting. While DFO has closed Chinook retention until July 15th, I strongly encourage you to keep fishing. Be as gentle as possible when releasing salmon, but don't let the regulation changes keep you off the water. Better still, take the time to take a youngster out and instill the love of the fishing lifestyle in the next generation. That might be the best way to preserve our way of life.
Fishing is very good out at the double bumps, with Pink Sink being the hot lure. There are fish closer in too, with even one confirmed report of a nice Spring being taken from the Shore at Rocky Point.
A larger class of fish has moved in to the Nanaimo area, as local youngster Jack Armstrong found out with a nice 15lb Chinook landed just before the DFO decision came down.
Keep fishing, Stephen Vavrik
