Winter Springs in the Fall
2019 Oct 21st
Well, fall is here so it's time to fish for 'Winter Springs'. Also know as feeder Springs. These are fish that will be mature next year, but a lot of them are already legal sized right now. Some are even in the 12-15 lb range. While you may catch and release many undersized ones to get them, these fish are full of fight and are at their peak eating quality.
Best locations are the normal winter fishing ones. That is the East Side of Gabriola with Whale-bone to Silva Bay being the best. Fish the bottom in 150-200 ft of water. Cookies and Cream spoons, and glow white flashers have been producing. Also T-Rex and Blue meanie hootchies have caught some fish.
I hear the Coho fishing in Nanaimo River is very good right now. If there seems to be too much current, look for back channels. Remember Coho go up any little puddle. Twitching Jigs have been by far the best lure, and coincidentally, we just got a shipment of them in.
Prawning is very good, with very large hauls coming from the Entrance Island area.
